Process of dealing with the past and returning to some kind of balanced relations after a conflict between people of different religions, cultures, races, etc. About the act of bringing two groups together again after some type of division. Violent division is often emphasized but does not have to come out of violence. Always a hard task to create an environment for two different people when they have had very different experiences. Must be open and willing to find compromise. Not about forgetting the past or re-writing history, it is trying to show that there are alternate realities to situations. Bewaltigung means overcoming the negative, the guilt, mental injuries these two words combined = reconciliation in german. Before ww2, these words combined as one did not exist. History books change: all curriculums now include ww1 & ww2. West germany first began this, but is fundamentally a national process laws passed against neo-nazi groups.
