This is a very america-anglo idea of history, completely ignores the spanish side of us. Indigenous people were not rational because they had not developed the same civilization as them. If they do not develop in the same way, then they will be conquered through war. 80% of treaties were never ratified by us congress. Racial doctrine: the lighter skinned you are, the purer you are. Indigenous peoples even had their own slaves. Problematic as laws of race became codified. Any free white man could own a slave. Taking darker skinned people (slaves) and giving them access to christian teachings, work ethics. South never believed in a world without slavery. Feel as though they have taken on god"s mission. Crops such as tobacco and cotton require constant human contact, free white people were not going to do this so they imported slaves. Children born into slavery could not be free. Often competed against white southern agricultural based cultures.
