Treaty of waitingi and reconciliation in new zealand. Maori: regular ones: not the gods, lesser than beings. Aotearoa: land of the long white cloud. Polynesian - like hawaiians - genetically connected: distinct from other people, as they arrived there somewhere in the 13th century. They are originally from hawaiki - nowhere knows exactly where these islands are. They are very conscious that they are from hawaiki and arrived where they are. Kupe: rst maori to reach new zealand (aotearoa) in the 13th century - leader of the group. !1: they go back to kill the octopus, they succeed, and then decide to make that land their new home. Aboriginal australians are distinct from the maori of new zealand. Whanau: extended family: own the longhouse communally. Whakapapa: genealogy/lineage: they came from 7 canoes, they all share a common language and know their lineage from these 7 canoes, linguistically and ethnically the same people.
