Document Summary

Plate tectonics: about 10-12 plates, shape and sizes change over time. Theory of tectonic plates: based on observations, patterns are not random, summary, outer shell of the earth is composed of layers (think shrek, they move slowly, geologic activity happens at the margin of plates. Map of plates: arrows mark the way the tectonic plate"s movements and interactions with the others, p. ex: colliding or moving apart from each other. Definition: vibration of earth/rock produced by the release of energy stored in the layers of plates subjected to stress: energy source that helps understand the earth system. Energy radiation: body (travel through earth, surface (damaging) waves. Body waves: p-waves: first wave generated during an earthquake, p. ex: slinky to wall. Straight through: propagate through solids and liquids, s-waves: second wave generated during an earthquake, p. ex: rope to wall, shake, only propagate through solids. *waves propagate in 3d, and are shows as rays paths (vector), not waves.
