Both types work at the same ime and reinforce each other. Water works its way into cracks in rocks and the freezing enlarges the cracks in the rocks. Lenses of ice grow larger as they atract liquid water from surrounding areas. Large masses of igneous rock are exposed by erosion, glaciaion and concentric slabs break loose. An exfoliaion dome is formed ater coninued weathering cause the slabs to separate and spall of. Joints are fractures produced by contracion during the crystallizaion of magma. Plant roots grow into fractures in a rock, causing the cracks to expand.
