In almost every indigenous language, they have terms for the people . Dene = the people who flowed from our female (earth) Anishaabe = beings made out of nothing. Nehiyaw = people of the four worlds. Apeetowkosan (another word for cree) = one who is half. These names become apart of canadian/american policies. Changes the way that canadians/american perceive these groups. Lot of concern when eskimo changed to inuit because canadians believe that they would lose their cultural heritage, did not considered with how the inuit people felt about being called eskimo. The term eskimo is actually a racial slurr. These words transformed them into something that outsiders understand. Used to define the country that was first . Some people are not offended by metis/half breed because it relates a lot to their culture (farming, agriculture) Native, aboriginal, indigenous all mean the same thing.
