Share a lineage with polynesian people, but they are different because they populated themselves in new zealand. They come from here (not the same as hawaii) People thought that they were following the right protocols. Slime found on their hooks, had a bad day of fishing. The rival community had a pet giant octopus. The octopus ended up eating all of their food. Said that octopus must be killed or they will starve. Kupe and his people attempt to kill him and follow him after a long distance. Eventually reached land (now known as new zealand) when they needed to re fuel. Can still see the footprints where kupe and his dog first landed. Continued to chase the octopus around new zealand. All physical features that you can see from the water were named by kupe and still have the same names. They kill the octopus and decide that they will stay at the island they found (new zealand)
