Sexuality and Aging
-normal aging process on its own does not necessarily impact sexuality however as people
age, their sexual desires may decrease
-true for both men and women (but women are 2-3 times more likely to experience a decline
in sexual desire as they age due to decreased hormone levels, medical issues, cultural
issues, etc)
-as you age your sexual response gets slower
-more, longer, varied types of, foreplay
-use lube or medication
-erectile dysfunction is very common (nearly 75% of men have had some form of ED at some
point in their life by the time they reach 70)
-older men are more likely than older women to be sexually active
-older men usually have a partner in older age (because they die first and women are left
alone)

-if men are sedentary or have heart issues they may have more difficulty having sex in older
ages

-sexuality is defined as a broad concept that includes a number of sexual behaviours and
actions including how one describes their personal sexual identity, issues around emotional
intimacy, sexual intercourse, sensual activities, etc
-sexuality may involve the explicit goal of achieving an orgasm, the goal of achieving pleasure
from hugging or kissing, pleasures such as massages, lotion, lingerie, stripping, etc
-sexuality is a central aspect of being human
-sexual expression: engaging in desires sexual actives
-sex: not solely about intercourse but encompasses a range of sexual feelings and behaviours
-when doing research with adolescents, they have a limited view of sex (leave out anal,
other types of gay sex)
-oral, anal, vaginal, fingering
-masturbation: involves stimulation of the genital organs for sexual self-pleasure
-there is a taboo regarding masturbation in elderly
