Thinks that casting himself with the revolutionaries will help him change the world. 1908 he gets arrested for heist of stealing gold: shipped off to siberia, repeatedly escapes from prison (repeatedly b/c he keeps getting caught) Hears about what"s going on in st. petersburg (1917) and takes a trip there to try and help out revolutionary cause. Gets named editor in chief of pravda (bolshevik newspaper: shows how popular he becomes amongst bolsheviks. Gets named commissar of the nationalities by lenin. When lenin dies (1922) the question is who is going to replace him: lots of guys in his inner circle that were better positioned to replace him.
