Strategic bombing of strategic targets and terror bombing of civilians. Goal of strategic bombing is to force enemy to surrender: break their industrial capability to fight by bombing industry. Problem is that bomb sites aren"t precise, pinpointing specific locations is hit and miss. Turned to carpet bombing: bomb large area of territory and somewhere in the area is the factory, plant, etc. they wanted to originally bomb. They then turned to terror bombing: kill workers that work in factories, terrorize enemy population, kill their morale and will to fight. Germany terror bombs london, allies bomb german civilians. Americans and british moved from strategic, to carpet, to terror bombing. They realized afterwards that bombing didn"t help that much. Japanese architecture isn"t made out of stone or concrete, they are made out of wood. Makes conditions ideal for fire bombings, makes them more effective. Night of the 9th/10th march 1945 fire bombing raid launched on tokyo.
