Economically, many latin american countries lagged behind the pace set in north america, europe or. Southeast asia, even when they had been ahead or at least on par with them at beginning of the 20th century. Populist dictators dominated some latin america"s major countries in the mid-20th century. The cold war opened the way to military dictatorship, notably in brazil, chile and argentina. Democratic transitions ushered out most but not all of the countries plagued with caudillos. Taking power in 1930, getulio vargas crushes both the communists and the fascistic integalists. In 1937, he assumes full power and creates the vaguely fascistic estado novo before allying with the u. s. against hitler. Ousted by the army in 1945, re-elected in 1951, he kills himself in 1954 when the army tries again. The heirs of vargas offer the country a whole new capital city, brasilia, by 1960.
