Hitler"s plan all along, in living space in the east. Destroy most of soviet air force on the ground. Doesn"t even send winter clothing with his troops. Saved by one of the coldest winters in history. Advance pushed back at the last minute. Stalin ready for long, drawn out war. Ready to relocate government from the other end of the country. Stalin willing to to risk countless lives to hold the city. Leads to the surrender of the german army around stalingrad. Red army starts their march towards berlin. Becomes a war to preserve the motherland. Germany loses 700 u-boats and 30 000 sailors. Allies lose 3000 ships and 40 000 sailors. Main turning point of world war one. If germany won the atlantic they probably would"ve won the war. Germany can"t win if the us sends supplies and britain isn"t starved. Attack when they surface or move ships away. 1000s of merchant ships surrounded by destroyers.
