From 1578 to 1732, the british crown granted 35 charters in the atlantic region. Jus gentium cited to dispossess indigenous inhabitants of the land. Christianity used to justify abrogation of indigenous legal systems. East india company (1601): british crown granted monopoly trading rights to the eic but company was financed by private investors. A way of conveying knowledge about the world. A way to make order by systematically classifying everything in the natural world, taking away any ambiguity. No more descriptive observation, now scientific thinking. Naming and claiming authority over all the world"s things by ordering them. An attempt to naturalize the myth of european superiority. Race became a way for europe to measure its own identity and progression. Classification of humans according to a supposed hierarchy of races. Term was first used in law to prevent english or white women from having relations with people of colour.
