French made exhausted and put to their limits. Up until now the war has unfolded as predicted, people still think it will end quick- ly. New technologies of war: life in the trenches. Romantic idea of war confronted by the horrible realities. Plans do not allow for retreat (must not retreat if they don"t advance) > have to dig holes to hide in and not get killed; trenches will become more sophisticated. Both sides build trench networks and race to sea.
