Divide into 3 types of colonies: colonies of white settlement, white people got on british ships and settled, useful and important to britain. I. e. to canada, new zealand, africa: allow for export of surplus british population, also important economically > trade. Britain cannot feed itself > depends on its international partners, to feed. Crown jewel to britain: considered different from the rest of its empire, more important symbol of empire and colony, giant place. Tons of trade > very important economically > india = key: cotton, indigo, tea, rice, etc. from india (crucial raw materials)
