We will revisit our core regional themes: postcolonial development, cold war turbulence, political culture and inequality as we engage our own stereotypes to decipher an area the west often views as volatile". The stereotypes only capture a small portion of the region. In the west we see the middle east as one of the world"s most volatile regions. Different images of islam highlight middle eastern diversity: regional profile. Islamic/jewish states: forms of islam: sunni, shia, sufi and salafist, wahhabi, feminists and liberal islam. A lot of diversity within islam as well.
