Victor jara - brutally hurt as a prisoner of war. Modernization: goal once you achieve independence and to improve your backward country and follow the path of the west. Struggle for economic development: difficult task. post colonial states were underdeveloped consciously and the economy was there to benefit the mother country. Nation and state building in post colonial societies: they had a weak state; a lot of tension between various ethnic groups. overcoming and maintain stability would be a great obstacle. Neo colonials: independence didn"t mean sovereignty; ex. Lumumba; banana republic and policies were really constraint. Many of the economy was dependent on commodity export (coffee: can vary and fluctuate. Neo-colonial aspect: many are independent and receiving aid; majority of the revenue is still going to the west. countries had to borrow money and give back to the west (congo).
