Reasons for travel #1: the mediterranean access to the east was blocked by the ottoman empire. Also, most of these routes were blocked by italian city states. Reasons for travel #2: the missionary zeal of the jesuits and their need to christinize other lands in order to complete gods bidding/wishes for them. Reasons for travel #3: the european limits of the known world and a need for further exploration. The aztec empire would conquer other states and make them tributary states by slavery or enforcement.
