Themes: constitutional autonomy w/in the dominions, race and nationhood, nature of economy and depression. "new" dominions --> "the" dominions or "white" dominions: time had passed, more importantly, reaction to the war itself, clear to all that the dominions had suffered grievous losses, just like britain. Negotiations after the war was shaped by those shared losses. Some dominions became small imperialists themselves: controlled portions of the former german empire, australia and new zealand control of german pacific territories. Increasingly integrated into a world political system: part of a world system as much as a british empire, became less british through the process. In the midst of war, britain promised its allies much: promised recognition of constitutional autonomy for the dominions. Constitutional autonomy: robert borden and pm of s. africa.
