Non russian republics were integrated by force after the revolution and were kept within the soviet union by repression. These nations always exists and reemerged after the collapse. But it is more complex than this. On the eve of revolution in imperial russia was already extremely multi national. Even the different valleys have different structures. National ideals in russia were less than in western europe.
