Lecture 5: gram positive and gram negative bacilli. Can be caused by playing with soil/dirt, or if you work with animal hides. Unique: has protein capsule, antiphagocytic: othere bacteria that have capsules, usually have capsules made of carbohydrates. Prevention and treatment: vaccine is available, treatment is available. Capsule protects & is made of protein: cutaneous and respiratory routes for spores (can get through openings on skin, or through inhalation) from animal hides and/or soil. Causes food poisoning when spores enter food. 2 types of enterotoxin (enterotoxin = exotoxin that acts on the gastrointestinal tract: heat labile (cook food properly to get rid of heat labile eneterotoxin, heat stable. Blocks ach release muscles cannot contract; flaccid muscle paralysis: bilateral cranial nerve palsies (drooping of skin on face is even on both sides of face) Antitoxin: antibodies made for a specific exotoxin. If all muscles get paralyzed due to botulism, may take 5-10 years to regain ability to swallow.
