Document Summary
Caused by infecion with t. pallidum usually sexually transmited. Dark ield microscopy may show bacteria (use luid oozing from lesions) May be passed to fetus via congenital infecion. May involve skin and mucosae, cardiovascular or nervous system. Serology is the main diagnosic tool, becomes posiive during primary stage (slight decline in late syphilis) May involve the skin, joints, ns or heart. Causes bullseye rash, can be treated with anibioics but needs more treatment if greater damage has occurred. Humans accidental end-stage hosts, infecion from exposure to water contaminated with urine from an infected animal. Obligate intracellular energy parasites (can"t grow on ariicial media, can"t produce atp) Most common sti in canada and the usa, causes urethriis in males, cerviciis in females. May cause pid in females and prostaiis in males if untreated. Also causes trachoma (chronic ocular infecion), lymphogranuloma venereum (sti results in inguinal lymphadenopathy) Causes resp. infecions, mostly subclinical, spread by aerosols.
