Document Summary
Tinea corporis (fungus and not an actual parasite) Cyclospora: protozoa (unicellular, giardia lamblia, most frequently identified intestinal parasite worldwide. Disease: giardiasis; infection of the small bowel, most infections are asymptomatic but also associated with various intestinal symptoms (especially diarrhoea and steatorrhea - excess lipids in stool). Host: organism which is home/food source for parasite. May cause retardation of growth and development in young children. Intermediate host: secondary home, lie condo in florida for winter months. Vector: how parasite gets from host to host (e. g. tic) Prevalence - g. lamblia prevalence rises through infancy and childhood and declines in adolescence (related to faecal- oral route of transmission) Other high ris groups include travelers and immunocompromised. Diagnosis: identification of cysts in faeces by microscopy. Transmitted through mucous membrane contact (no resistant cyst aka environmental phase recall chlamydia) Epidemiology: trophozoites in the bowel become cysts eliminated with stools and then accidentally ingested.
