Document Summary

Microbiology is the study of small organisms. Immunology is the study of protection of foreign molecules or organisms and our responses to them. Different classes or organisms: mycoplasma can grow on non-living media, viruses, bacteria, parasites. Viruses have nucleic acid surrounded by protein capsid: dna or rna. Bacteria have cell walls and no nucleus: circular chromosome, dna or rna, mycoplasma have no cell wall (plasm) Not all bacteria are bad: biotechnology, fermentation, bioremediation, non-pathogenic, normal flora are good for us, there are resident and transient flora. Resident flora find ideal environment in the body and stay forever. Only harmless if they stay where they are supposed to be: large intestine is most populated, skin is full of flora. Mostly coagulase negative staphylococci: genital tract, mouth, natural flora can protect us from invasive bacteria. Competition for space and nutrients (competitive exclusion: some are for metabolism (vitamin k production, young and old people have smaller population of flora, experiment with washing hands.
