Primary environmental determinants are biological agents in the air, water, and soil. Over 1 billion people are unable to meet their basic needs (food, water, shelter) due to lack of income. Physical: air, water, soil, housing, climate, geography, heat, light, noise, debris, radiation. Biological: man, viruses, microbial agents, insects, rodents, animals, and plants. Psychosocial: cultural values, customs, beliefs, habits, attitudes, morals, religion, education, lifestyles, community life, health services, social and political organization. Contributes to 25 percent of preventable diseases worldwide; 13 million deaths. Water and air pollution causes 1/3 of all diseases and 4 million deaths in children under age 5. Improved management of environment can prevent 40% of (three biggest childhood killers) deaths from malaria, 41% from lower respiratory infection, and 94% from diarrhoeal disease.
