HSS 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Sulfur Dioxide, Ozone Layer, Nitrogen Dioxide
Document Summary
Chapter 14: choosing healthy living for the environment. Efecive environment management is needed: avoid 25% of preventable diseases worldwide, prevent 13 million deaths annually. Unsafe water and air polluion: 4 million deaths annually (children under 5) World populaion predicted 9. 2 billion (2050: majority of growth is in the developing world. Esimates for populaion growth: ferility rates and life expectancy, populaion increases = compeiion for resources. North americans consume the most energy: most raw materials per person worldwide. Sulphur dioxide (acid rain, fossil fuels, pulp and paper mill, diesel) Ozone: a gas formed when nitrogen dioxide interacts with hydrogen chloride. Smog: brown hazy mix of pariculates and gases, temperature inversion, cool air trapped under warm air. Acid rain: precipitaion contaminated with acidic pollutants, sources: burning fossil fuels, efects: environmental damage, respi. Problems, metal out of soil, crops, monuments, structures. Indoor air polluion: wood stove, furnaces, asbestos, passive smoke, formaldehyde, household chemicals. When oxygen interacts with sunlight ozone is produced.
