Transactions are interactions that are verbal and non-verbal (includes content and relationship dimensions of the message) Context is setting of health care communication or number of participants. Responsibility conflicts (responsibility for disease and cure) Autonomy struggles: scope of practice, access to facilities) Limited access to information: privileged (to family but not yet patient), filtered (family after patient) Disruption of roles: role adaptation; ambiguity (loose) or rigidity (constricted) Closed communication patterns: because of family rules, new rules may be needed. Rule 1: dominant or submissive behaviours stimulate opposite behaviours in others. Rule 2: hateful or loving behavior stimulates the same behavior from others.
