Government allowed african american men to live with syphilis so they could know what happens when you live with the disease (in a trial) Big sugar: sugar industry funded 2 harvard researchers to focus their attention on fat, they skewed the science and the course of public health during those times (people listened to the scientists) Politics was at play in the bad science in this case; need to know who has the power. Used prisoners because they are a good constant participant, also have less freedoms. In 1625, people didn"t know the cause of the plague, thought it was. God"s retribution for sins or left up to superstition. We tend to look for the cause and scapegoat people, the scapegoat is often wrongfully accused (normally the weakest in society)
