HSS 2305 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Atp Hydrolysis, Perpetual Motion, Endergonic Reaction
Document Summary
Explain the significance of the first and second laws of thermodynamics. Define free energy and its relationship to the spontaneity of processes. Clarify the distinction between steady state and equilibrium. Explain the concepts of activation energy and transition state. Describe the enzyme kinetic principles and define terms (km, vmax) A living cell bustles with activity at all times, to do this a cell must acquire and expend energy. Bioenergetics: study of energy transformations in a living organism. Energy: capacity to do work; change or move things. Thermodynamics is the study of the changes in energy. The laws are as follows: first law of thermodynamics: conservation of energy, energy can be neither created nor destroyed however it can be converted (transduced) from one form to another. Ie. chemical energy in atp is transduced into mechanical energy as the organelle move about the cell. E=q-w where e = internal energy, q = heat energy, and w = work energy.
