Document Summary
The medical-industrial complex is a large, growing network of private and public corporaions that provide. Class 17: medical-industrial complex medical care and products, supplies, and services for a proit. The pharmaceuical industry is one of the largest, most inluenial components of the medical-industrial complex. Drugs coninue to be the fastest-growing category of health spending overall in the canadian health system. The vast majority of this overall canadian drug expenditure approximately 84% is for prescribed drugs; the rest is for over-the-counter (otc) drugs. Today, drugs are the second largest health-care expenditure ater hospitals (see figure 14. 1 in your textbook). One signiicant cause of the rapid increase in drug expenditures is the development of newer, more expensive drugs as well as aggressive adverising to physicians and consumers. While the canada health act covers all necessary visits to hospitals, physicians, and surgeons as well as a porion of long-term care services it does not include prescripion drugs outside of hospital.
