HSS 2342 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Essential Amino Acid, Nitrogen Balance, Amine
Document Summary
40% of our body"s protein is found in skeletal muscle, 25% is found in organs, and the rest is found within the skin and blood. Good sources of protein are milk, eggs, meat, legumes, grains, and vegetables. Other roles: the chemist"s view of proteins: amino acids. All amino acids contain c, h, o, and n. all 20-22 amino acids consist of a central carbon with a hydrogen, an acid group (cooh), an amino group (nh2), and a unique side group. There are 9 essential amino acids, and 11-13 non-essential amino acids: amino acid chains. The condensation of two amino acids forms a dipeptide. This occurs when an oh group from the acid end (cooh) and an h atom from the amino group (nh2) of another join to form a molecule of water. A peptide bond forms between the two amino acids, creating a dipeptide.
