HSS 2381 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Univariate, Scatter Plot, Dependent And Independent Variables
Document Summary
Univariate data: 1 or more independent variables, and 1 dependent variable. We collect data on 1 variable for each person. Bivariate data: when we collect data on 2 (or more) variables from each person. The two variables are called x and y (doesn"t matter which is which) Don"t name them dependent vs independent variable. Plot data as scattergram to see relationship. Doesn"t matter which axis each variable is on. Measures strength of association between 2 or more variables (we only consider. + relation: variables vary together, changing in the same direction. Relation: variables vary together, and change in the opposite direction. Shape: correlation coefficient assumes a linear relationship. Strength: indicated by size of r, the correlation coefficient. The more the data points scatter around the line (rather than on it), the lower the value of r. R = 0 means no relationship (independent) Further the value is from 0, stronger the relationship.
