Most causes of illness are related to health behaviours (50%). This is also the most modi able, which is why it is so important to focus on. Following behaviours comes environment (20%), genetics (20%), and access to care (10%). 80% of chronic disease is caused by: physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and smoking. Programs to in uence health behaviour, including health promotion and education programs and interventions, are most likely to bene t participants and communities when the program or intervention is guided by a theory of health behaviour. Tied to the health belief model, as it concerns peoples" decision making, behaviour, and perceptions: locus of control and self-ef cacy. Although someone may believe that how some future event turns out is under their control (control dimension), they may or may not believe that they are capable of behaving in a way that will produce the desired result (self-ef cacy). Internal locus of control: forces within your own control, responsibility.
