Good communication is essential to patient centredness: disability and communication. Disability (and age) can complicate communication in a number of ways: sensory impairments: vision, hearing, cognitive, and physical, personal factors: patient and professional, environmental factors: physical, health care system, communication accommodations. The number one thing when building a rapport with a different individual is to get the other person to talk about themselves: research. Mindfulness is important, as you are in the moment which conveys that the patient is the only thing that matters in the moment.
