John peters humphrey famous for writing the initial draft of declaration of human rights. Human rights those rights that pply to every person simply because they are human. Hr is a part of international law un charter of 1946. 3 dimensions: political and civil liberty rights: right to life and physical integrity. Human rights council (geneva) 47 countries uphold human rights. Un security council- protection of hr during wars and conflicts ex. Universal nature originates in the west but applies to everyone else. Pretext for war- western countries used to enter other countries. Separate conventions need for vulnerable groups (refugees, children), often excluded, no voice. Human right being embedded into international law ex. compulsory primary school education. This is not also upheld though, dangerous to go to school and this should be controlled by government but it is not. Hr promotes this idea of unconditional positive regard. In canada we use human rights and the us uses civil rights.
