In general, reference to local/place has been central to the definition and description of community. Focus on helping people to build on their strengths. Helping people progress in terms of social and economic aspects: looking at what communities have to offer already, push to look at education and employment which are linked to improvements in social and economic. Should look at short and long term impact of your involvement. Should look at impact you are having on community you intend to work with. One of the first healthcare disciplines to consider community as an area of assessment, treatment, and service was: Some of the earliest public health initiatives included: nursing, life threatening hygiene or sanitation, immunization of children, addressing unsafe physical environments. Hard for people to get to institutions. What"s new is that we are trying to make these individuals more. It is not a new idea- fairly old professional and more skilled more providing good quality care.
