Introduction to health and disease: de ne health. Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or in rmity. Unintentionally contributes to the medicalization of society (most of us would be considered unhealthy most of the time) Demography of populations and the nature of disease have changed considerably, as people can now live with chronic diseases for decades. In utero: developmental origins of health and disease (dohad) Homeostasis is when all cells, tissues, organs, and systems work to maintain equilibrium. A change in structure or function that is considered to be abnormal. Pathophysiology: study of the physiological processes leading up to disease. Pathology: study of disease in general: manifestations of disease. Signs: objective evidence of disease observed on physical examination. Ie. abnormal pulse or respiratory rate, fever, sweating, and pallor. Can be witnessed, something that can be seen or measured with a tool.
