Sociolinguisics examine the inter-relaionships between language and society. Sociolinguists focus on the co-variaion of linguisic (someimes called internal or systemic) variables and social (someimes known as external or extralinguisic) variables. All living languages vary & each language exists in a number of varieies. When we say things like canadian french or american english these labels are abstracions . All languages include a considerable amount of social and regional variaion. Idea that variaion in language is not random. Although variaion is rampant or widespread in all living languages, it is not random or unpredictable. William labov famous sociolinguisic who shows that language exhibits structured or orderly heterogeneity: structured or orderly heterogeneity means that language variaion is systemaically paterned or rule governed, eg. Aspects of linguisic variaion have been found to correlate in interesing ways with aspects of one"s social idenity (age, gender, etc. : correlaions between aspect of linguisic variaion and social categories are referred to as sociolinguisic paterns.
