Some diferences reside in anatomical diferences: men have thinker/larger larynxes so typically they have deeper voices, however, social variaion exists here sill. Polish men typically have higher voices than american men. Sex convenionally deined as a biological category. A cultural construct which refers to traits and behaviour that are deemed appropriate for women & men in a paricular society. Early research was interested in idenifying categorical diferences between men & women. Gender exclusive features are features said to be used by/towards a speciic sex only. More common to ind gender preferenial features which are more common to one sex: dominance approach. Women were conceived as a subordinate, suppressed group and this was apparently relected in their use of language. Women"s language oten seen as deicient, so men"s language was taken as the norm and women"s language as deviant.
