The medieval inquisition originated in france in efforts of the church to destroy heretics like the cathars. However, the spanish inquisition was established at the end of the 15th century and had very different origins; it was also created to deal with a different sort of problem than the medieval inquisition. Its origins date back to almost a century before it was formally established in 1391. Spain had a very large jewish population in the middle ages and it is likely there were more jews there than anywhere else. 1391 when christian spain" (most of spain) had a wave of violence against jewish communities. In castille and aragon, a large number of jews were forced to convert to. The coverts became known as conversos or new. There were so many jews that they could not all be assimilated to.
