When rock started in the 50s, it was seen as a liberation from boredom, breakdown from the boredom of everyday life, caused a rift b/w adults and young people cos adults didn"t lie it, they saw it as rebellious. Moving to the 1960s, rock started being used for opposition purposes, brought about the characteristic of rock being mostly used for resistance, rock was seen to have a culture of resistance/opposition. Rock then started coming into mainstream music, in the 1970s people who strongly believed rock to be resistance/protest music strongly opposed the commercialization of rock that had started. A lot of punk artists in the 1970s tried to use punk to go back to rock being used for opposition purposes only.
