Type of popular entertainment dating to 19th century but continued into first few decades of 20th century (around tin pan alley and early jazz age) Stereotyped elements of black life in songs, dance, and speech. At first, performed by whites who blackened their faces using shoe polish. Later, blacks performed and darkened their skin even further. They wore costumes that represented to the white audience stereotypes of a black person: ex: na ve plantation slave and urban dandy. These two stereotypes continued, but stereotypes eventually worsened, depicting them as crude and lazy. Al jolson in the jazz singer: interpreting his performance is problematic because his role was based on racism. Jolson was known for fighting against racism toward blacks on. Performing in blackface eventually was seen as racist and fell out. Strong overlap of musical traditions into rock and r&b.
