Theory: must be meaningful and relevant but above all, it must be understandable. Theories are the accompanying narrative to conceptual models and frameworks. They provide a detailed description of all of the components and outline relationships. They define concepts, relationships between concepts and the assumptions of framework. Significance of theory: unique theories and perspectives created/used by a discipline distinguish it as a discipline. Theories clarify basic assumptions and values shared by a disciplines" members and define the nature, outcome, and purpose of practice. Before nursing theory: nursing was largely subsumed under medicine, their theories and values that informed nursing. Our practice was prescribed by others and relied on tradition, not evidence. First to essentially define the modern nursing process, through observation of the sick and their environment, recording observations, developing knowledge about factors that promoted healing.
