Monroe kellie doctrine theory: applies to intra-cerebral autoregulation. Body wants to maintain a constant homeostasis within the brain and the parenchyma, csf and blood. If one level increases, the body will try to compensate to maintain homeostasis by autoregulating the other 2. If there is an increase in csf volume, the body will autoregulate cerebral blood flow (will decrease it) in an attempt to maintain homeostasis. Icp: the amount of pressure that exerted into the brain/ventricles. If more than 5 minutes elevated, must do interventions. Cerebral perfusion pressure (cpp): mean arterial pressure (map)-icp. Do not need to know how to calculate for the exam. Increase can be caused by increased blood pressure, head injury, stroke. Happens when there is ischemia to brain cells due to thrombosis or bleeding. Pt s/s and outcomes depend on the extent and location of the ischemic lesion. There is a neurological deficit which lasts for over 24hrs.
