PAP 3310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Qualitative Property, Content Analysis
Document Summary
Midterm e. g. of long answer qualitative data; example of this in public administration. 1-2 long questions: links are all available on lecture tools. Theory and research hypothesis tested v. theory and developed from data and research questions answered. Large n v. small n (n= # of cases) Qualitative research is concerned primarily with words and images rather than numbers. Usually inductive: the process starts with field research, then concepts and theories are developed. Interpretivist: concerned with finding out what an action or event means to the people involved. Flexibility and limited structure: research questions tend to be general. Especially early on: little or no theory driving the research, the topics explored in the research may change as the study progresses. Ethnography/participant observation: immersed in the social setting. Qualitative interviewing: in-depth, semi-structured or unstructured. Bias can result from personal relationships that develop during the research.
