Arguments from definition: truth of conclusion is guaranteed by definition. Categorical syllogism made of two categorical statements. In categorical reasoning the statements, or claims, of interest are categorical statements. Make simple assertions about categories or classes of thing: ex) all cows are herbivores, some business people are moral, no gardeners are plumbers (2 categories = gardeners and plumbers) Mind comes up with categories that that individual does (categories for classes) The statement or claim is called a categorical statement. Categorical syllogism is made of 2 categorical statements, but the whole argument is made by 3 categories: ex) all humans are moral. A categorical syllogism consists of three parts: major premise, minor premises and conclusion: ex) all humans are mortal (major premise) Any premise that has the predinent of the conclusion is the major premise!! (in this case it is mortal) containing the subject of the conclusion is the minor premise. 1) all s are p (universal affirmation) =ua.
