Many of the exam exercises will be similar to the ones in the textbook. Philosophy is just about argument and working on this skill. When put in standard form: 1) we number them, 2) we label them as premises/conclusion, 3) premises are always above conclusions, 4) inferences are indicated. Example p. 15 unemployment won"t increase because the economy we should expect the deficit to decrease . If other expenditures are held constant, we should expect the deficit to decrease. 2) people use words that are used in different senses. 3) there are lots of extra details. 4) sometimes there are missing premises or conclusions. Example p. 16 guns are dangerous it"s time for the police chief to act . 1) a teenager who had threatened people was shot (premise) 2) if the police had a taser then he would not have been killed (premise)
