39 views3 pages

Document Summary

To start: some failed arguments for and against animal rights: indirect duty views (kantian deontology, contract theory, kindness/cruelty view, utilitarianism. According to the indirect duty view e. g. kant, he has sone something wrong to you and to himself by upsetting you and damaging your property, but has not done something wrong to your dog. An indirect duty view could suggest that either the dog doesn"t feel anything, or that the dog does feel something but it doesn"t matter because only human pain matters. Regan: no rational person would hold any of these views, since animals feel pain, and pain, for humans or animals, is bad. Morality is a set of rules individuals voluntarily agree to abide by (e. g a contract) Those who agree to abide by the contract are covered directly. The contractors can also have protection spelled out for others who are not able to understand/sign the contract.
