Challenges that socrates was faced with contradiction with heraclitus and. Truth and opinion = are two different things. He"s not looking for examples of what it is but what the essence is as in the: essence of justice or love. Type of essence: virtue, beauty, justice, love = they are all subjective. Symmetry is a component of physical beauty there is a constructed element to beauty/ cultural. This helps him get over the conflict of parmenides and heraclitus because its universal. Stuff that doesn"t change and stuff that does change. Heraclitian element that socrates brings is the dialogue you have to look at the dialogue like a scientific instrument. That"s when the theory of knowledge comes in. Theory: the forms exist beyond but they participate in this world. We see instances of them; like instance of beauty but we don"t see beauty itself. Hence we can recognize them but we cannot know them.
