PHI 2380 Lecture 13: 2015-03-06 - Phaedo 2
Document Summary
2015-03-06: philosophy is the practice of dying. Why: knowledge the lover of wisdom seeks knowledge to have knowledge of beauty is not simply to perceive, it"s to know what beauty is (the essence). But what beauty is isn"t perceivable through the senses, only the mind. Only if someone can separate the mind from the body can they fully perceive. Death is also the separation of the mind and the body. Same idea as parmenides (don"t trust your senses, they deceive you): virtue the philosopher also seeks virtue. What people take to be virtue is actually the false perception of virtue (moderation and courage). Moderation not giving in to certain desires (being in control). To better be able to pursue other desires. Avoid pleasure in the short term to avoid displeasure in the long term (a trade-off). What enables people to overcome some fears are other fears. Out of fear of his superiors/what might happen if he doesn"t fight.
